Celebrating 30 Years of ECA, A Delivery Industry Alliance: A Legacy of Partnership, Growth, and Industry Leadership
Thirty years ago, the Express Carriers Association (ECA) began with a simple but powerful vision: create a place where carriers, shippers, and industry vendors could come together to build relationships, share knowledge, and strengthen the delivery industry. Today, as ECA celebrates its 30th Anniversary, that vision has grown into one of the most respected alliances in logistics, connecting professionals across North America and fostering opportunities that continue to shape the future of transportation.
How Did ECA Become a Driving Force in the Delivery Industry?

The 30th anniversary marks more than a milestone in years. It represents three decades of collaboration, innovation, and resilience in an industry that has evolved dramatically since ECA’s founding. Throughout changing technologies, shifting customer expectations, and increasingly complex supply chains, ECA has remained a trusted resource and unifying voice for independent carriers and logistics professionals. Its commitment to professional development, advocacy, and business-building partnerships has helped members navigate change while creating new opportunities for growth.
What Has Fueled ECA’s Growth Over Three Decades?
What started as a gathering in a single hotel meeting room has transformed into a premier industry alliance and a driving force within the logistics community. According to current ECA President Mike Ditzio, the organization’s success is rooted in the dedication of its leadership and membership.
“For nearly thirty years, the Express Carriers Association has delivered unparalleled value to our membership and MarketPlace attendees. What began decades ago in a single hotel meeting room has evolved into a premier alliance and a formidable force within the logistics industry.”
Ditzio credits the organization’s growth to the commitment of past presidents, board members, and staff who have continuously invested in strengthening the association and advancing the industry. Looking ahead, he sees tremendous opportunity for continued expansion.
“Looking ahead, the future of the ECA has never been brighter. By leveraging strategic industry exhibitions, embracing emerging technologies like AI, and relying on the structural strength of our organization, we are positioned to expand our reach even further. Our potential is limited only by our imagination and creativity.”
Why Do Members Remain So Connected to ECA?

While ECA’s accomplishments are impressive, its greatest impact may be measured through the relationships it has created. For many members, ECA has been far more than a business organization—it has been a professional home where lifelong friendships and partnerships were formed.
Few people capture that spirit better than former ECA leader Jim Bernecker, whose involvement with the association spans decades. Reflecting on his experience, Bernecker recalls the people, experiences, and opportunities that defined his journey:
“In 2001, I ran for the ECA Board of Directors and was honored to be elected. I had the privilege of serving alongside industry leaders such as Brad Westrom, Bruce Birtwell, Carrie Ehlers, Jim and Paul Steffes. The legendary Don Weeres was President at the time.
I also had the pleasure of serving with other unforgettable personalities and influences in my career, including ECA co-founder John Storm, Dave Reichbaum, Cheryl Williamson, Pam Witt, Stuart Hyden, Lance Adams, and of course Jim Luciani.
The experiences, friendships, and professional relationships I have built through the ECA are too numerous to count. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has been part of this remarkable journey over the past 30 years.”
What Does Thirty Years of Industry Leadership Mean for Logistics?
As ECA celebrates this landmark anniversary, it also celebrates the vital role its members play in keeping commerce moving. From supporting small businesses to enabling large-scale distribution networks, ECA members contribute every day to efficient supply chains and exceptional customer service across countless industries.
The 30th Anniversary is both a reflection on the organization’s remarkable history and a launch point for its future. With a strong foundation, engaged membership, and a commitment to innovation, ECA is well-positioned to continue creating meaningful connections and opportunities for the next generation of delivery industry professionals.
Where Will ECA Lead the Industry Next?

The years ahead present exciting opportunities for ECA to further strengthen its role as a catalyst for innovation and collaboration within the delivery and logistics industry. As technologies such as artificial intelligence, automation, advanced route optimization, and real-time visibility continue to reshape transportation, ECA is uniquely positioned to help its members navigate these changes and capitalize on emerging opportunities.
The association’s commitment to education, networking, and strategic partnerships will become increasingly valuable as the industry faces evolving customer expectations, labor challenges, sustainability initiatives, and growing demand for faster, more efficient delivery solutions.
By continuing to bring together carriers, shippers, and vendors, ECA can serve as a platform for thought leadership, business growth, and industry advancement, ensuring that its members remain competitive and prepared for the future. The next decade may see ECA expanding its influence beyond traditional networking and advocacy to become an even more significant driver of innovation, best practices, and meaningful industry connections throughout North America.
For thirty years, ECA has brought together the people who make logistics happen. The next chapter promises to be even more impactful.
