ECA Board of Directors

The Express Carriers Association is governed by a Board of Directors elected by and from the general membership.

Board Members:

  • Serve a three-year term and must be re-elected every 3 years to continue to serve on Board
  • No two people from the same company can be on the board at the same time.
  • Attend two meetings at the annual Marketplace, plus three other meetings (Summer, Fall & Winter)
  • Participate in Conference Calls during months that we do not have a face to face board meeting.
  • Individual board members are responsible for covering their own costs to attend the meetings. The ECA does not reimburse nor in any way, pay the members of the board of directors.
  • When an unexpected opening on the board happens such as when a serving member resigns, the President of the board may appoint a new member at his or her discretion and then that person is voted upon by the entire board of directors.
  • Those individuals who give so much of their time, talent and money to support the ECA, keep the organization running to the benefit of not only the membership but also the industry as a whole.

Jim Bernecker graduated from Ohio University in 1992. Prior to beginning his career with Relay Express, Jim worked as a Kindergarten teacher, an Executive for the Boy Scouts of America and a Director for the YMCA.

In 1998 Jim Bernecker began with Relay Express as a salesman for the Dayton, Ohio office.

In 2001 Jim was elected to the Express Carriers Association Board of Directors where he served his 2-year term on the Shipper committee.

In 2003 Jim was promoted to Operations Manager for Relay Express and moved into a daily role in the Company’s Headquarters located in Cincinnati, Ohio.

In 2004 Jim was promoted to General Manager.

Under Jim’s leadership, Relay Express was named to INC. Magazine’s top 5000 fastest growing privately held companies in America for 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014.

In 2014 Jim was promoted to Chief Operations Officer.

In 2017 Jim was named President and Chief Sales Officer
Relay Express currently has 8 locations including company headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio: Columbus Ohio, Dayton Ohio, Cleveland Ohio, Romulus Michigan, Buffalo New York, Indianapolis Indiana, and Louisville Kentucky.

Jim has been married for 22 years to his wife Mindy. He has three children, Brett age 18, Brody age 16, and Kaylen age 13. When not at Relay Express, Jim enjoys exercising, cooking, working outside, and spending time with his family.

Prior experience as COO with Hackbarth Delivery Service covering numerous SE US market areas. Key executive experience in national route service businesses (Trugreen, Suntory / Dannon). Extensive experience in air freight with Emery Worldwide prior to sale to CF.

I went to high school in Indianapolis, Indiana and I attended college at the University of Louisville. I have been in the transportation business for over 35 years and my background includes courier, small parcel, less-truck-load, and truckload freight experience. For most of the last 30 years, with the exception of a few years in the late 1990's, I have been employed by Kid Glove Service LLC in Indianapolis, Indiana, where I am the Vice President. I also oversee and handle the national accounts for our in-house 3PL, H & F Logistics LLC. I became a member of ECA in 2006 and I have been on the Board of Directors since 2010. I am proud to be associated with such an amazing organization and truly appreciate the opportunity to continue serving our membership.

Pam Witt is a business owner, wife of Jim for 41 years. They have one daughter, her husband, and two grandchildren (16-year-old girl and 1-year-old boy). Pam started at Bonded in 1979 and purchased it in 1999 with Carrie Ehlers. Pam has been with ECA since the very beginning! Pam says MarkePlace Is important because “it provides you the ability to speak to shippers in a 3-day span and all the networking and friendships I have forged at ECA.” Joining the ECA is meeting shippers and vendors in one place. An actual sales event! Creating relationships with shippers throughout the USA. The marketPlace has allowed pam to get some of their largest accounts -- both from the shippers and the carrier side. Pam recommends MarketPlace by saying, “You need to try it and you will come back year after year.”

With over 35 years of operations management experience, Mike has planned, executed, managed and transformed various types of operations for some well- known U.S. companies. As an operations leader for companies such as TForce Logistics, Avon Products, QVC Network, Aetna Insurance and United Parcel Service Mike has developed numerous processes, operating plans and organizational successes. As a distribution center manager for Avon Mike was responsible for servicing 65 retail outlets in the Northeast U.S. as well as the repair of high tech medical equipment. At QVC Mike held several positions as Third Party Fulfillment Manager, Capital Projects Manager and Manager of Corporate Services. While at Aetna Life Insurance as Director of Fulfillment Services, Mike developed technology and processes to distribute all forms of collateral to 16 million HMO subscribers. Mike held several positions at RMX/UPS as VP and GM for the Northeast U.S. before moving into the position of Manager for New Products in the corporate marketing department in Atlanta. Mike has held several positions at Ensenda/TForce Logistics most recently as the Director of Carrier Services where he managed a network of over 500 active courier and delivery partners and another 1,000 where he has direct relationships. Mike has a BS from La Salle University. Mike lives near West Chester, PA.

Liz Klein grew up on a farm in Southwest Missouri where she excelled in athletics and played the saxophone in the school band. After high school she moved to Springfield, Missouri where she earned her B.S. in Marketing from Missouri State University. In 2004, with a desire to make her own path, she moved to St. Louis where she had no personal or professional ties.

In 2005 Liz was hired as the St. Louis Account Executive at Crossroads Courier, which had opened in 2002 and, at that time, had approximately 10 employees and 10 drivers. In 2009 she was promoted to Senior Account Executive and in 2010 was again promoted to Sales Manager. Her title was changed in 2013 to Director of Business Development and in 2015 she was promoted to Vice President. At current, Crossroads Courier has 62 employees and 300+ drivers with offices in 4 cities.

Prior to joining the team at Crossroads Courier, Liz worked in the restaurant industry through high school and college. Liz was working as a bartender when she took her first position at Crossroads and continued to bartend on weekend nights until she enrolled in the MBA program at Webster University which she completed in 2011. Between 2009 and 2015, Liz married and became a mother of two. Her daughter, Shelby is now 7 and her son, Sully (Sullivan) is 3. Liz adores her family and has found endless lessons and rewards in parenting from which, she believes, all of her successes flow.

Today Liz is responsible for Crossroads’ business development and account maintenance efforts as well as their I.T. department. She works closely with her team to maintain loyal relationships with the current client base and capture profitable opportunities. Liz is focused on keeping her finger on the pulse of our quickly changing industry and analyzing the competition to learn best practices.

I have over 30 years of experience in the insurance industry with an emphasis in transportation, working with truckers, freight forwarders, and property brokers. Prior to joining Avalon, she was employed at Trade Insurance Services as the Marine Manager. After leaving there, she worked for a well-known international freight forwarder for more than 7 years. This opportunity allowed her to gain experience not only in insurance but also an understanding of the freight side of the business. Deirdre started with Avalon Risk Management in 2002 as Account Executive and currently holds the position of Regional Vice President of the San Francisco/Seattle territory. She currently holds a position on the board of directors for the Express Carriers Association and is an active member of the insurance community.
In her spare time, she loves spending time with her grandkids, Jordan & Jacqueline. When not with her family you will find her golfing in the Western AZ.

In 1974 Larry earned a BS in Applied Biology from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He served in various sales and management roles in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry from 1974 through 2008 at 3M Healthcare, Glaxo-Smithkline, Amgen Inc, and biosStrategies Group Inc. Larry became an investor in Pace Runners Inc in 1999, and held the positions of Director and VP of Sales and Marketing for Pace from 2010 through 2018. He currently serves as Chief Marketing Officer for Pace. Larry and his wife Beth have been married for 50 years and have 3 grown children and 3 grandchildren.

This diversified background along with A-1’s varied portfolio of customers in the medical, pharmaceutical, critical parts, retail, and final mile residential industries helps him to understand all aspects of the courier, warehousing and logistics world.

Rick proudly worked his way through college in the service industry as a driver where he continued to work his way up into management after college remaining for many years until 8 years ago when he was recruited by a national logistics company where he worked his way through aspects of the company. Rick has recently become the COO of Condor Express.

When her partners succeed, she succeeds, and she carries this ideology with her when dealing with every partner regardless of how large or small their operation might be.

Carly joined DDI in 2012, she left for an opportunity at GrubHub in 2017 and returned to DDI in 2019. With her experience, she has witnessed first-hand the incredible growth in the gig economy in which DDI operates. This growth fuels her drive and passion for the industry, her partnerships, and for DDI. Samantha is currently the Business Development Manager for Eveready Express. She started as a customer service rep in 2013, was promoted to Customer Service Manager, then Account manager, before becoming Business Development Manager in 2017. Samantha has been integral in growing Eveready’s customer base, and in opening new business lines including NE Regional Expedite, and most recently through attending the ECA, to open our Pool and Retail Distribution business. Samantha graduated Emerson NJ high school in 2003, became an E.M.T, and was licensed for almost 10 years. During her time as an E.M.T she has been credited with several awards, including E.M.T of the year by HUMC. In 2007 she enlisted in the Army National Guard and was looking forward to becoming a Military Police officer until medically discharged due to injury. She also worked at MetLife Stadium and earned the employee of the year award in 2010. Samantha’s passion in life is to help those in need and is involved with several fundraising organizations. Samantha and her daughter Hailey have Neurofibromatosis so she has become an advocate in dedicating her free time to fundraising for the Children’s Tumor Foundation as well as the Brain tumor foundation.
